Home game against St Bedes/Mentone. Final score 5.4 34 to Colts 3.7 25.
After a great first year the team has made the Division 1 finals and will play St Bedes/Mentone again next Sunday at 10:30am at King George Memorial Reserve, East Bentleigh in Semi-Final 1.
Awesome game girls. We have come so far and after this week's game we know we can beat this team when we face them again this week in our first final.
We started a little slow allowing the opposition to get 2 sneaky goals early. We were also a little slow to hold our players accountable by sticking close to them, making sure they earn every touch of the ball.
In the second quarter we started to turn it on with everyone going hard, showing courage with big tackles, contests and marks. We had the majority of the ball in our 50 throughout the game but were unlucky and unable to convert our possessions to goals.
However, if we focus on the positive that we actually had the ball and not focus on any negatives when we miss a goal or a target we will definitely beat them on Sunday.
Everyone played fantastic team footy with great linking plays across the ground.
With 22 players and only 15 on the field it made rotations very hard. I anticipate that it will be the same again this week.
Awards this week; Bog - Holly, Ava, Chey, Olivia A
Team awards- Lucy P, Caitlin, Matilda, Olivia B, Zoe G
In the absence of Beck Marshall this week I will file the match report on her behalf. Firstly, a big thank you to Dave O'Connell for filling in with the coaching duties today and ably assisted by Jack McKenna.
What a great win today by the girls in what turned out to be another nail biter against Mordialloc-Braeside after a drawer in our last match. Final score was 2.3 15 to 2.2 14.
As Dave stressed to the team today, the opposition was generally taller and stronger however if we were to play to our strengths; competitiveness, tackling and speed we could more than match them and we did.
Well done to Phoebe Faulks in what was easily her best game for the Colts today in defence. She was outstanding laying some outstanding tackles, all legal and in the spirit of the game and set a great example for the rest of the team.
Another top performer was Holly Rothnie who has been building her form over a number of weeks and demonstrated a great ability to get involved in the contest then follow that up down the field with continued effort. Also not to mention her fantastic overhead mark at full back in the dying minutes to save what could have been a match winning goal to M-B.
Other good players today were Ali P, Olivia B, and Sofia. Also well done to Lucy DGC and Chey for their brave efforts in finishing the game given their injuries.
After the win today we are currently placed fourth on the ladder one game clear of Mordialloc-Braeside and our finals position will depend on the result of their match against East Malvern next week.
Regardless we will need a competitive match against the third placed team, St Bedes-Mentone in the last match this week.
Training will be as usual on Thursday at 5pm followed by the photo shoot at 6pm.
See you all there.
The girls played East Malvern who were sitting second on the ladder. It turned out to be a relatively even match after East Malvern kicked ahead with the wind in the first quarter eventually running out winners 4.13 37 to 2.4 16.
Another good game today but unfortunately they wanted the ball more than us and took the win.
It was a very windy day with the opposition winning the toss and kicking with the wind in the first quarter. They snuck in a few quick goals however we held them to only 2 goals, which is a fantastic effort! Our back line was fantastic showing confidence to contest the ball and clearing it from their 50 time and time again. Ava was our brick wall again in full back stopping many attempts at goal.
Some of our smaller girls Olivia b, Harriet and Sofia showed courage to get in and under breaking through the packs and linking plays to our forward line.
Holly was given the unforgiving task of tagging one of their strongest players, taking it in her stride and taking her out of play for most of the game.
Our goals came from strong team work with accurate kicks, strong marks allowing both Ali and Jelly to kick two fantastic goals!
Awards today went to:
Holly, Izzy, Jazzy, Olivia B, Sofia, Caitlin, Ali, Jelly
We are contesting well now and have got the basic skills covered. So this week at training we will be focusing again on protecting the player with the ball(correct positioning), switching the ball and increasing our intensity. As todays game was a direct reflection of how we have been training the last few weeks. So come to training ready to go 100% in every drill.
Great effort today and next time we will definitely beat them!
Today we played Oakleigh Dragons at Murphy's Reserve under blue skies with a gusty wind making play a little difficult. We walked away with a fantastic win 3.10 28 to 2.3 15.
Coach's Match Report:
What an awesome game girls. Well done on a very deserving win!!
We are improving each week and today was real evidence of this.
Our contesting was outstanding, as was our team work and tackles. Now we know and understand this we will start to focus on our team structure and positions.
I know everyone in the team believes in each other, so now I want each of you to really start to believe in your own ability. Back yourselves by having a kick for a goal and playing on.
This Thursday we will be practicing how to build the wall, spreading and switching so we can use the whole ground. The more you train the better our skills will be and will make sure we are able to hit our targets. So let's get everyone there again this week.
Thanks also to Matilda for assisting Jack and me with coaching you did a great job!
Awards were hard to give this week as everyone played well. So well done to:
Zoe O, Sophia, Phoebe, Olivia A, and Mimi.
Let's get another win next Sunday x
Today we played the top side and we went in hard, sticking to our goal of making them earn every single ball.
We kept them to 3 goals for the first half which is a fantastic effort when you compare their previous results against other teams.
We are definitely starting to contest strongly and everyone is now backing themselves and taking their players on.
Fantastic games from everyone especially Olivia A. Kody, Zoe, Olivia B and Holly. The whole team just didn't give up and put in 100% effort.
Ava played her best game so far becoming our brick wall in full back.
Unfortunately they out ran us in the second half and were just too big and strong across the ground.
Another great game even if the score board doesn't reflect it.
I encourage everyone to try to get to training on Thursday so we can practice some team drills and continue to develop your skills.
A word from Simon (Team Mananger)
The first week of the school holiday break proved difficult for the girls, with 10 players either injured or away on holidays. The 14 available battled bravely going down 17.16 118 to 0.1 1.
We look forward to the return of our full squad on the 10th July.
Good luck to Cheyenne in her recovery and great to see you and Harriet at the game on Sunday lending support.
It is also fantastic that Harriet, Matilda, Lucy P, Kody and Olivia A. are all attending the 2-day Simon Black Football Camp this week. Well done girls!
In ice cold conditions the girls ran out onto the field with only 14 players.
We started off a bit slow but by the second quarter we were contesting well and hitting the packs with hard bumps and strong tackles.
Some stands outs included Lucy, Olivia B, and Holly laying awesome tackles, big bumps and running hard all game.
Matilda took a fantastic mark and kicked our only score of the day.
Our defence was very strong and was put under a lot of pressure with Ava a big stand out.
The scoreboard did not reflect our effort, but our smiles coming off the field definitely demonstrated we did our best and enjoyed the game.
Well done to everyone.
Awards this week went to:
Lucy D, Holly. Olivia B
Coaches awards: Matilda, Lucy, Alex G, Caitlyn
Enjoy your holidays and we will see you in two weeks.
We started the day with 20 players so for the first time we had a full team with 2 on the bench.
We knew it was going to be a hard tough game but everyone believed that we could win this time around. We started off very strong clearing it from the centre and kicking the first few goals, but no score came easy.
Our contesting was amazing with everyone trying their best, and everyone holding their positions and not getting sucked into pack footy.
The last quarter was tough but we fought as hard as we could and held on to draw with Mordi.
Such an amazing team effort with everyone enjoying themselves and remaining positive the whole four quarters.
Awards were very hard to pick this week as everyone played their best. Awards this week went to Sofia Lucy Jelly Ali P Olivia A Issy and Zoe.
Well done girls see you at training.
PS Our next game is at home this week against St Bedes/Mentone at 11:30am, please arrive by 10:45am and for those girls without blue shorts I will sort that out at training on Thursday night as the new shipment has now arrived.
The following week is a bye for the school holidays on 3rd July with the next game on the 10th July in the last weekend of the school holidays.
Also, we have a confirmed night for our team photo at training on 28th July, details and costs to be advised. Please pencil it into your diaries as we would like to have all the girls in the photo.
The girls ventured to East Malvern today for hard slog in the mud and rain.
It was a close fought affair with the girls going down 4.6 30 to 1.2 8. Click on the team photo to access more photos of the game.
Coach's Match Report
What a fantastic effort from every single girl throughout the whole four quarters. Today we learnt how to play in wet heavy muddy conditions.
We displayed courage putting our heads over the ball in pack conditions, awesome hard tackles and almost 100% contested balls.
Sofia, Lucy, Mimi, Ali, Zoe and Apples didn't stop running all day and had to earn every ball.
The backline was amazing and worked very hard trying to hold their positions, stick to their players and overall they won the ball getting it out of their scoring end. Special mention to Holly, Issy, Jaz, Buzz, Charlie and Phoebe for their 4 quarter effort.
We managed to get the ball into our 50 more than the scoreboard showed. Zoe G killed it in her first game with the support of Zoe, Jelly, Olivia B, Ava, Matilda and Alex.
Both Phoebe and Zoe played their first game today both standing out and having the confidence to take on the game.
To say I am proud of our team effort and our positive happy attitudes is an understatement. Each of you are displaying the strong Port Colt values and are a pleasure to coach.
Enjoy your weekend off see you Tuesday week.
The girls travelled to Oakleigh to take on the Oakleigh Dragons after they beat us at Port only a few weeks ago. The girls were in control of the first half and led at half time. In the 3rd quarter Oakleigh kicked 3 goals to take a slender lead into ¾ time. In the last quarter our girls played a sensational quarter with the ball predominantly in our forward line, kicking 2 goals 3 behinds to zero with a man down for the quarter. Final score was 4.8 32 to 3.3 21.
Coach’s Report from Beck Marshall
Wow what a fantastic game! It was a hard, fast, tough game. We played fantastic team football and fought to win every minute of the game.
Our intensity was amazing throughout the whole four quarters and our contesting was the best it has ever been.
Tackling was also a clear stand out.
I’m super proud of every player out there today as each of you put in 100%.
Today we demonstrated just how much we have improved over a 3 week period! I am so excited to see how we will continue to improve throughout the season.
Well done girls, let’s use this win to set the momentum for the remainder of our season.
The girls have been put up to Div 1 and this week we came up against the top side. Our focus was to contest the ball at all times and to hold our structure and not get sucked into the pack.
The girls clearly listened and fought their hardest until the final siren. Our contesting , marking and punching the ball made the other side have to earn every point.
We started to build the 50m wall and it was clear the girls were starting to understand where to position themselves during each play.
Our team attitude was amazing and in such trying times must be acknowledged.
Each player needs to stand tall and be proud of our effort today. If we keep improving like we have over the last three weeks we will get back on the winning train.
Well done and see you all Thursday.
St Bedes/Mentone 10.6 66 v Colts 0.2 2
The girls faced another tough physical game today. They fought hard throughout the whole game, unfortunately falling away in the last quarter. Every player tried their hardest and faced a tough challenge, finally coming up against another fast running side like ourselves.
Some fantastic 2nd, 3rd and 4th efforts from many players including Apples (Olivia), Zoe, Chey, Mimi, Olivia and Harriet.
Izzy played a strong 4 quarters in the backline with Alex, Buzz and Holly all laying strong tackles and never giving up.
The forward line tried their hardest with Matilda, Jelly, Caitlyn and Ali all taking on their players working together.
Unfortunately Lucy hurt her ankle after an amazing fair hard bump which put pressure on the other team to work hard to earn the ball.
We may have lost this game girls but there is definitely room for improvement and I am sure we can turn it around next time we meet them.
Let's continue to get all players to training to help us to get our structures right
Well done be proud of your effort as I am super proud.
What a fantastic game. In trying conditions our skills were definitely tested. With most of the girls in the team never playing in the rain before it was a totally different game to what they were used too.
The opposition were a lot older and bigger than the majority of our girls but our girls proved that we have what it takes to beat them. In the last quarter it all came together with everyone putting in 100% effort and everyone believing that we could win. Unfortunately the time got away from us this time.
Throughout the game we were tested with the opposition putting in some big tackles, bumps and strong marks. Even though we didn't win this time, everyone knows that if we can all put in 100% effort for the whole four quarters we will show them next time.
Well done everyone. So proud of your positive team minded attitudes. No one gave up and everyone was smiling enjoying the game.
Special mention to Kody who injured herself in the third quarter we wish u well.
The girls had another good win against Beaumaris at Cheltenham this morning
under very difficult windy conditions, following the heavy storm overnight,
3.4-22 to 2.3-15.
With the massive down pour overnight the girls were very lucky to avoid the wet conditions with almost no mud. Although the wind definitely gave them a challenge which they quickly adapted too and took advantage of in the first
Again every single player followed the team rules and worked hard together challenging Beaumaris for the whole 4 quarters.
The girls showed great confidence and skills through getting in and under, strong hand balls and accurate kicks. It's hard not to mention every single player as everyone played so well and all are improving each week. Some great plays included Buzz running off the backline, Lucy with her well known hard bumps, Alex P, Olivia B and Harriet going into packs hard with confidence, Chey and Zoe taking them on with numerous running plays.
Some great linking plays from the backline all the way through to the forward line, which at times involved most of the team, was fantastic to watch.
Well done girls on our win girls. Each week we are learning and our standard is getting higher and higher.
See you all at training for some contesting drills.
With 1 less player our girls showed they have already bonded as a strong team with every single player getting involved and encouraging each other.
I could honestly say something great about every girl on the field as everyone put in 100% effort and always did the team thing. Special mention to Lucy who went in hard for the ball, Sofia cleaning up all over the field, Olivia and Harriet going in and under, and Izzy laying some awesome tackles.
I am super proud of each of the girls and I can't wait to see what we will achieve when we have our full team.
Special thanks to Peter Borg for helping out with Goal Umpire duties today even though his daughter, Nayely is still overseas with Olivia A. on their school trip. Also thanks to Steve Mallia for taking many fantastic photos and sending them to me including the one featured. You can check out the gallery here.
Last Sunday marked the inaugural game for a girls team at the PMJFC with our Under 15 girls taking on Mordialloc-Braeside at Parkdale. Whist we were down on numbers for the first game we should all be extremely proud of their attitude and tenacity against a bigger and stronger team, eventually losing by three goals. With our full team we will enjoy success before too long.
The girls started off strongly even though we only had 13 players including, Georgia who thankfully filled in. Mordialloc was kind enough to supply 3 players who they rotated each quarter.
Our girls played well as a team, with all of them demonstrating a clear understanding of our team rules – including having confidence to pick the ball up and never kick it along the ground, always having 2 or 3 people around the ball to support each other by providing a second or third option, and everyone doing the 1% efforts by providing blocks and shepherds.
Some fantastic play was displayed by Sofia and Chey through the mid field, with some big bumps and awesome tackles demonstrated by Lucy and Zoe.
I am extremely proud of how we all played as a team, supported each other, and acknowledged each other’s hard work out on the field.
Great start to the season girls, I am confident when we have our full team we will definitely turn the result around.
This week we are due to play St. Kilda City on Sunday afternoon, but again due to the long weekend we are tight on numbers with a forfeit looming.
Training will be on Thursday night at 5:00pm and the girls are welcome to stay on after to watch the senior girls play a practice match under lights at 6:30pm. Also there will be a meal available at the clubrooms for $10 a head, please confirm with Jules on 0413 744 999 if you wish to order.
